Motion is a better design tool, but After Effects is in many ways a better production tool for motion graphics. Motion was designed for the editor to easily create good motion graphics with little training, and After Effects is geared toward the professional motion graphics artist who has more training. Both have advantages and disadvantages compared to the other and it is well worth learning both if you want the most capability.

It's clumsy but: Apply the Mirror effect (in the Perspective category) to a clip. Copy that clip and paste it a few times into the tracks directly above the original. Be sure to change the mirror settings so it is different in each clip. Crop the area of each clip to reveal a different mirrored section. Which version of Final Cut Pro are you using?

Try changing your capture settings to use Firewire for Device Control, but for the signal either use the correct HDV setting or have it convert to the new ProRes 422 signal. Don't try to capture it as a DVCPRO HD signal because it isn't!

I'd suggest that you consider reinstalling from the original disks. You DO have the original disks that you purchased legally?

Put a deinterlace filter on the still frame.

You can't listen to the audio as FCP is capturing it in earlier versions. Monitor it directly from the camera or deck. In FCP6 you can check an audio preview switch in Log and Capture that will let you heat what's being captured.

Correct. During capture you can only hear audio when patched into the source deck, not through your computer.

I think the HV20 records in the MPEG format so you might try changing the Capture Settings to use the Apple Intermediate Codec.

What compressor are you capturing to? Frame rate? Check your capture settings.
