Smart Tempo Question (The use of Scale Left, Move Right in Video 13)
Neil Gilmartin wrote: Quote: Hi Joe. First, thanks for another great video series. After you use Scale Left, Move Right in video 13, the audio as shown in the Smart Tempo Editor is consistently on the first upbeat, not the downbeat of the bar. I'm not sure why this should be what you're aiming for and what the orange arrows are supposed to be showing? The arrows point to the downbeat, but the audio - to my eyes at least - is falling on the second beat of each bar so I'm a little confused by what the message supposed to be here with these arrows. When you make a further adjustment later in the video, the audio is then falling consistently on the 3rd beat of each bar in the Smart Tempo Editor. Is this just 'stage one' in the process - making sure the beats and the audio match regardless of downbeat/upbeat distinctions - before a 'stage two' where you align the audio with the downbeat? :Unquote Hi Neil - This appears to be a streaming playback artifact -- after making the adjustment(s) the clicks *are* in fact on the downbeats as the voiceover states (you can tell from the accented click), but at times the video seems to be running about a beat (or a half a beat) ahead of the audio. The audio/video sync is correct in the original version of the video playing directly from my hard drive, confirming that it's a streaming artifact of some sort. This audio/video sync issue happened a couple of times when I played through the video online, but I could not reproduce it consistently -- refreshing the page seemed to put the streaming audio & video back in sync. It could be a specific browser/network issue, but just in case I'll pass the information on to our techs.. Btw, you are correct, the orange arrows indicate the key downbeats in the audio, showing the initial edit and how that corrected the timing for the other clicks -- or it least it would show that if the audio & video were in perfect sync. For now, trust your ears rather than the display during those playback passages -- you can hear that after the edit(s) each downbeat (accented) click does in fact fall on a downbeat, regardless of where the playback cursor is at that moment in the video. If there's any further information, we can follow up here..

Thanks for your reply, Joe. And more generally, thanks for your informative videos. I've made my way through all the series on the audio plug-ins. These were exactly what I was looking for as a newcomer to DAWs. Thanks again.
