Working on video projects has been a nightmare after always running out of space memory and places to put everything I thought I had a solution figured out ....... Store my libraries on my nice Lacie portable HD then just import the clips everything stays on the Lacie and there isn't too much LAGG... A couple months go by and my computer can barely run FCPX with out freezing after about ten minutes so i Update everything except to Mojave cause i'm not ready currently running High seirra 10.13.16 3.5Ghz i5 24GB 1600mhz DDR3 AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB only have 20Gigs available because I HAVE NO WHERE To put stuff but usually enough before I could import all my clips work for a while eventually freeze restart carry on ....... finally finished that project now onto a new one and my Imac and macbook FCPX will NOT import the clips off my memory card with out Using uP All my computer power and crashing or freezing everything up ....... I am trying to import a full 64GB card of 4k Video which i usually dont have that much content... But this is all day wedding MY first ONE!!! and i Have 5 more cards full of content to import and edit ............. Any suggestions ANYONE please I have searched all over and still no signs of help my only thought as of now is downgrade final cut pro from 10.4.6 to something before

Going by the specs you listed, the bottleneck in your system would seem to be disk space. The thing that jumps out in your description is "only have 20Gigs available...but usually enough".. It's not really clear from the post but if you're talking about your startup (internal) disk, this is definitely not enough with a modern computer—the OS uses the startup disk in the background, and what you're describing sounds like what could happen if there's not enough free disk space, which can slow things down to a crawl, especially if FCPX is using the startup disk as a scratch disk. The general rule of thumb re free space on a startup disk is at least 20% free space, though for your application I'd suggest that 20GB might still not be enough for video work. Of course if disk space was not what you were referring to with the 20Gigs comment and you do have plenty of free space on the startup disk, then your system spec seems like it should be ok—in that case something else could be at play, a more likely culprit being incompatible s/w vs OS version issues.. If the issue *is* related to disk capacity then maybe your import settings are not ideal for what you're doing.. From your description I assume you have the Import Preference "Leave files in place" enabled , but just in case—and since I don't know what your level of expertise is—here's a video link to a FCPX course that discusses that, in case there's something there that might help.. (But even if that is how it's set, if the startup disk really only has 20GB free, I think that still would likely not be enough for video work, let alone 4k video work)..

Ok i tried what you said saved them all to my hard drive but now if I try to import those clips on FCPX the option to keep files in place is in grey !? probably because they are not on my actual computer so it says i have to copy them and thats the problem what if i Just drag and drop from the Lacie drive will it copy them automatically????

Ok, two things.. Apparently when that option is greyed out it may be because FCPX thinks the files are still on the camera card because they're still in the same folder structure as they were in on the card; supposedly if you move them out of that folder structure then FCPX will realize they're on an external HD and allow them to be imported with "Leave files in place". (I don't have FCPX on this system to test with, but it seems that's a common issue).. But I reread your original post and I realized that you said that you're "stor[ing] my libraries on my nice Lacie portable HD"; If you have in fact located the FCPX Library for the project on an external drive and are working off that drive, and if that drive has plenty of free space, then you shouldn't really have a problem...unless the Lacie is the HD you were referring to when you said "only have 20Gigs available"..? If the files are being imported to a Library located on a large HD with plenty of free space then you shouldn't really need to "Leave files in place" anyway, "Copy to library" should be fine.. But when you say "what if i Just drag and drop *from* the Lacie drive will it copy them automatically????" it sounds like you're trying to move/copy the files to another HD—would that be the internal drive?..the one that, as far as I understand, doesn't have enough free space? From the description I'm not clear enough on your setup, particularly where the FCPX Library is actually located and how much free space is on that HD (as well as on the internal HD)..
