Hello Steve, I have a small boutique amp company called [url]http://mojaveampworks.com[/url] I create amp demonstrations to showcase our amp products. I do many of them by accurately replicating the original or desired tones of many great bands like Zeppelin or the Beatles etc. In order to to do this, I import the original artist recording as an .aif audio file, play along with a midi keyboard making a tick using the Klopfgeist in time with the music and create a beat map. I check the tempo with the metronome and it checks accurate to the original artist recording. I'm able to work up all the parts including harmony vocal lines with guitar, working with the original track makes this much easier and enables me to get the right vibe and choose the right amp tones as I go along. The beat map is accurate but the original tempo is typically all over the place. In particular, a recent demo was of a Beatles song, Dear Prudence and the tempo variances were very noticeable especially the tempo jumps up & down which were all originally recorded exactly as such. I made a copy of the project and I eliminate the beat map and made a steady average tempo of 77. This worked out fine for the drum tracks which had been run through the Apple Loops Utility and made into loops as well as the bass track that I had created on keyboard and is midi. The live guitar audio was mic'ed up and recorded via Neumann U87 and a Ribbon Mic and were superbly accurate and sound great but they are still running at the recorded tempo which was the beat map tempo. To get these guitar audio tracks smoothed out and to play along with the steady tempo of 77 has just got me stumped. I will tell you some of the audio guitar tracks were recorded with a little bit of tape echo live so they are not flat and dry. I have great faith in your ability to at least give me the right guidance maybe, what tutorials to watch so I can learn how to resolve this myself. I have watched a lot on the Flex editing 104 and worked all the way up through section 3 #16 but I don't think this is a Flex issue all together that I'm facing down or is it? BTW there are 13 guitar trax with all the solo and harmonies etc. I've been watching Mastering class #1 201 all day and am up to section 7 #49 but most of that is Midi orientated, Still extremely powerfully informative and endless all around learning which will be of tremendous use. I have not pinpointed how to take a beat mapped project and convert the recorded "Audio" tracks to a steady tempo that my midi bass and drum loops so easily adapted to. Correction, There are 19 total guitar tracks and only the clean rhythm tracks (Blue and Purple) have the live tape echo effect on them, those account for 5 of the tracks. Why so many tracks you might ask? Because I would record a track while using two different microphones at the same time. Hi Steve, It's me,[i]Chief Talk-A-Lot[/i]. First, thank's for the nomination on the longest question award. In my last post I wanted to undo the audio tempo I had already recorded against a beat map so as to "smooth out" the ups and downs of the tempo. Ah... forget it, to much work. What's done is done on that. looking ahead on future projects I wondered, is it viable to possibly "Flex" an audio file, like an old song with a varying tempo so it will line up with a steady tempo in my project where I've already got drums and bass done? It's working. I did have to slice the drum tracks for some reason even though they are loops. There is a bug. After you go into flex mode you will see that a track that was in Flex and then taken out of flex will have the follow tempo box checked for some reason, and that can mess up the audio so you have to manually uncheck them all.

I did it. It took FOREVER but I did it. Now I have to work up the cover demo for the amps but this was my first Flexed audio track in Logic 9 after watching the entire tutorial. I've watched 4 total tutorials thus far in 3 days. You rock Steve. I have learned more in three days then I have in 3 months as a new Logic user. In fact, I'm completely new to computer recording 100% so I really needed these well done tutorials. You have the best ones on the net. I took an old audio file, with a tempo that was all over the map and "Flexed" the audio track to match the tempo. I did have to put the drums into slice mode. Any reason for that? I'm a Logic 9 user, Just upgraded from L8 and have been working with Logic for just shy of 3 months. First I would like to ask of anyone who might suggest to me, which Logic tutorials deal in depth and can help me really learn how the [b]Sample Editor[/b] works? Made this drum track, tried using the TNT 1 Section #4 :How to find the Tempo. I set up a loop on a section on the region as show in the photo, then went to Options and selected [b]Adjust Tempo using Region Length and locators[/b] but it didn't really work. It gave me a tempo as you can see but the metronome does not line up with the beat at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I watched Steve H.'s Lesson, Flex Time Editing and section 4-19 & 20 talks about how the tracks need to be EXACTLY the same length in order to set up a group for Phase Lock editing. His examples were drum trax in slice mode which seem easier to deal with but what do I know. I have 4 "guitar" audio tracks I recorded. Same part just done with 4 mics at the same time. I checked the beginning and they are starting at the same location, 1 1 1 1 and I trimmed the 4 tracks with the play head all at the exact same location at the end. Now I still get the message telling me the tracks are not the same length & in fact, from what the help tags read, they are not. This is preventing me from selecting the phase lock option in the group settings menu. These 4 tracks were all recorded with 4 different microphones at different distances but that only makes a slight difference in phase. They are also Comp tracks and I have a punch in section on all four. The comp sections and the punch in sections for the four trax are not the same length, mainly due to editing at the zero crossover point (remember, phase differences, slightly different lengths etc). Do I need to merge these tracks first in order to get them to an equal length? My goal was to phase lock them and flex edit them to tighten up the timing on down beats etc. I worked on one individual track for hours realizing I had to do this 3 more times. One last question. Because these are different mics at different distances, I see the transients aren't exactly the same for each track when I put them into Flex view. I have them in Polyphonic mode with the "Complex" box checked. If I succeed in phase locking say after merging and trimming, will flex editing one track move the other tracks so the timing corrections apply to all tracks in the group? Did the Merge thing, got the phase locked and it appears the transits are all aligned. Is it possible to avoid all the flex editing with the Quantize feature or am I dealing with to much in the way of variation on the audio track for a simple Quantizing? Do quantizing the regions help after flex editing?
