I think this tutorial was invaluable for me.
For example the 'setting up the rhodes' tutorial. David went into some history of the rhodes which gave a real world dimension to a virtual instrument. (I didn't even know what a rhodes was! Just a noise generated inside a computer)
Then he says 'lets take a second to listen to the rhodes'. And then solos and plays the rhodes for almost a minute. He doesn't push any buttons, talk about marquee tools, or anything. Just listens to the rhodes.
That was such an important lesson for me! I had to forget about comping tracks and keyboard shortcuts for a couple of minutes and just use my ears to listen to an instrument and appreciate the way it sounds.
And his 'arranging the track' tutorial, where he talks about how someone who listens to the track should remember the first time they heard it, and always remember the feeling or emotion they had at the time... well thats just inspirational!!
It wasn't just about how to make music (and what plugins to use), it was about why we make music. Thats how it seemed to me, anyway. I really enjoyed it.
Thanks!
