If you need to integrate to an existing workflow, it will probably be Adobe-based. If you work alone, it depends if you need some of the specific features of one program or another. Photoshop is certainly the industry standard, but that doesn’t necessarily matter.
I'm a big fan of Pixelmator Pro on Mac OS. While I grew up on Photoshop, I find Pixelmator does everything I need – so much so that I have not used Photoshop in probably 5 years or more. One thing I like is I've never had to pay to upgrade it, and it's right in the Mac OS App Store.
Another vote for Affinity Photo.
