Using an external keyboards sound in Logic X
Hello all. New guy here. Mike. I have a Korg M50 and I'm trying to use the actual sounds from the M50 into Logic X. I have a MIDI to USB device and it works well with Logic's software instruments...etc. How do I set it up to use the input sounds from the M50?

Hi Mike - You have to make two parallel connections: - MIDI from M50 to Logic & from Logic to M50 via USB - Audio output L|R from M50 to Logic via 2 inputs on your audio interface In Logic you'd do the following: - Create a stereo Instrument track and select External Instrument as the instrument. - Open it up and set the MIDI connection from|to the M50 - Select the audio interface input[s] that the M50 is plugged into to bring the M50 sounds back into Logic On the M50 you'd do this: - Turn Local Control Off on the M50 [ Global: MIDI Basic ]; There may be other MIDI settings you might need to make on the M50, check the M50 manual.. The course attached above includes the video below on working with external instruments in a DAW; it's not all specific to Logic, but starting about 2:20 it covers Local Control [on the instrument] and the Logic External Instrument setup.

Hi Joe. First of all, ou an amazing teacher!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I just plug my korg minilogue xd into my audio interface by using L/R outs on minilogue, into two inputs on my focusrite. I get the sounds from my minilogue as audio signals.Am I doing this wrong?

Hi - Thanks! Your connection is exactly right -- since the audio is coming from the keyboard, you connect the keyboard's stereo LR audio outs into line-level audio inputs on your interface, and then you select those hardware inputs as the LR inputs to a (stereo) audio track in the DAW to record the sound as you play the keyboard. The other stuff in the previous posts was about recording MIDI data from the Korg instead of recording audio, and then triggering the audio from that MIDI data in playback -- a different approach. But if all you need to do is to record the audio directly from the synth, then you can ignore all that, your hookup is exactly what you need.

Thanks Joe. I understand now. He was just using his Korg as a MIDI controller. I use a separate dedicated keyboard for that. This is all very new to me, and I am starting to learn all this at age 57yrs. macprovideo.com, and in particular your courses, are teaching me so much. Thank you for doing this! Gerry; Ontario
