Setting up Cue Mixes (in Logic)
Student457056 wrote: Hey Joe, Thanks for this detailed explanation (https://www.macprovideo.com/article/logic-pro/logic-pro-x-a-guide-to-multitrack-midi-recording?afid=E470KLQ7r9) ... Let’s say you’re recording 8 digital pianos via MIDI and Logic Pro X (using the setup above). If you want to port each channel back out to the person playing as it’s recording into Logic, what’s the best solution? (Keep in mind that the audio they hear live from their piano isn’t the midi instrument that’s being recorded into Logic (for example it may be setup as strings)). 1. Is it best to port the audio out of Logic over 8 separate channels and into headphones for each pianist? 2. What is needed to go from Logic Pro X in the setup above and port the audio out to 8 channels? ... Thanks. Hi - It sounds like you''d want to create one or more monitor (cue) mixes in Logic (usually done via pre-fader Aux Sends), sending the Logic Instrument sound being triggered by each digital piano controller's MIDI data to the player, along with a blend (optional) of the other tracks playing along with him/her. One cue mix could be set up for all the players and distributed to them via a headphone amp with multiple outs, or separate cue mixes could be created (one for each player), via separate Aux Sends. To set this up you'd need additional audio outputs on the interface—one or two for a single (mono or stereo) cue mix that's distributed to all the players, or individual outputs for each separate (mono or stereo) cue mix that's fed to each individual player. This article discusses the most up-to-date features of Logic's Aux Send capabilities: https://www.macprovideo.com/article/audio-software/mastering-the-new-sends-features-in-logic-pro-x-1042?afid=E470KLQ7r9 And this video discusses setting up Cue Mixes in more detail (the graphic mostly shows Pro Tools but it works the same way in Logic)..
