Convert Regions To New Audio Files

Hi,
I'm studying Martin's Mastering Logic 8: #90. I'm trying to recreate steps he outlined to convert an Apple Loop to a new audio file so I can edit the loop. This is an 8-bar loop.
I went to Audio - Convert Regions to New Audio Files and got the dialog box. Martin said to change the File Format to anything other than AIFF or CAF, as these are use for Apple Loops. He had selected a wave format in the example. However, when I select Wave and save I get an error message: Not converting selected Apple Loop files. Apple Loops can only be converted to filetype AIFF. OK. So, I go back and save as an AIFF file and leave all other settings alone. But I notice that the size of the file will now be 3.6 MB, where it was 1.2 MB as an Apple Loop. Is that typical?
But after I save everytime the resulting file is longer than 8 bars and the key of the sample has changed. Is Logic time stretching the new sample to put it in the same tempo? What am I doing wrong?
Perhaps Martin had performed an additional step in a previous tutorial chapter. How can I convert this Apple Loop and keep the same file length and Tempo?
Thanks for any help.
