Logic Synths
Great to hear that the release of the Ultrabeat vid is immanent, will it be accompanied by the long awaited synth video? Also, will the Ultrabeat tut take into account all of the well documented bugs inherent in this instrument? Merry Christmas and keep up the good work, Simon (London UK)

Steve Horelick, the master of all things synthesis, is producing this tutorial. I\'ve seen the first half already (bragging, I know), and I think it\'s the best one yet! Having said that, if anyone has some specific topic suggestions, feel free to outline them in this forum. No promises, but you may get some tailor-made videos out of it ... :)

BTW, When putting in links, use the \"link\" fuynction, available just above the message input feild. This tags the link with special code that makes it clickable, and also helps search engines crawl the link, and that can help increase your search engine ranking ... :) In general, I think it\'s great when people post links to their personal sites ... I like to see what our members are doing!
From a newbie Logic Pro 7 user (convert from DP - don\'t ask), I would love to see some information on how to use external midi instruments (drum pads, drum kits, etc.) with Ultrabeat/Logic Pro 7. Thanks for the forums, great idea!
Hi Steve, and a merry Christmas to you and yours. For myself, most of the principles behind UB seem pretty simples once you get the hang of it. It reminds me of a supercharged Redrum with a built in Subtractive synth. In many ways it could be the best drum machine ever written but I have a few problems using it. Certain behaviours including importing presets or samples often leads to the deletion of previous samples or the changing of previous settings - A number of people on the Logic Forum have reported this and it can make UB a very tedious and time consuming instrument to program - If I\'m doing something wrong or if there\'s a quick workaround, it\'d be worth the price of the tutorial alone. Here\'s hoping, Cheers, Simon (London UK)

Hi Steve, Here are some of the UB problems that I\'ve been able to recreate today using a Logic song with one instance of UB with no other plugs of instruments (third party of generic) open. Clearly not everyone seems to experience these problems, but having said that I keep my mac fairly clean (Disk Warrior etc) and I don\'t experience problems like this with any other areas of Logic - or other apps. Another point I should make is that I tend to use the right mouse context sensitive menu to copy and paste out of the Import menu (rather than drag and drop) This is my setup: Power PC G5 1.8 (single processor) RAM 3GB OS x 10.4.8 Logic 7.2.3 1) When trying to audition individual drum sounds (from Drum Banks) by clicking on them in UB\'s Import drop-down menu, sometimes no sound is generated. 2) When trying to audition individual drum sounds (from Drum Banks) by clicking on them in UB\'s Import drop-down menu, sometimes Logic crashes. 3) Sometimes when individual drum sounds are imported using the Import menu, and then programed via US\'s step sequencer - Individual beats are clipped very short as if the gate control had been activated. 4) Sometimes when the Import menu is used to copy and paste a drum sound over an existing sound, although the correct sound is imported, the old sample name remains in the sample section of the second osc. 5) Sometimes when the Import menu is used to copy and paste a drum sound over an existing sound, although the correct sound is imported, No Sample Loaded is shown in the sample section of the second osc - although the waveform is still visible. 6) This one\'s really weird: When I try load the Shot Snare sound from the Acoustic Snare Bank a) The correct sound can be auditioned in the Import menu b) No Sample Loaded is shown in the sample section of the second osc c) And the Snare Rolls Sample, ie. the wrong sample is played back by the sequencer. 7) This is a fun one: From the Analog Kick section of the Drum Bank, (by right clicking) load the Standard Snare into slot one......Lovely. Now, from the Modern Pop KIt section in Drum Kits load the Side Stick sound into slot two. Now often (but not always) the sample from the first sound will disappear - though the waveform is still visible. 8) This is an interesting variation: If I use, let\'s say, the first four slots purely for sample playback (disabling all other generators) and, in this case, inserting four of my own third party drum samples - every-thing\'s fine. But should I choose to load a non sample based preset into slot five: BOOM! All my other slots loose their samples and become silent. Here are a few threads from Apple\'s forum that seem to relate to the same problems: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3433469&#3433469 http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2598431&#2598431 http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3439961&#3439961 Hope this helps, Simon (London UK)

Certainly my request, as with all training videos, it that the very first module is a thorough review and explanation of the user interface. In the military they call this stage 'naming the parts'. It is a necessary preamble to all subsequent explanation and means that you can repeatedly and easily refer back to a single point of reference whenever something is mentioned, the name or use of which has escaped your memory. I know it is difficult but when the module designer is as familiar with his subject as he must be to do the training, it is incredibly difficult not to make unconscious assumptions about the trainee viewers state of knowledge. With an initial'naming the parts' module it is possible to employ a newbie to review the content just to discover what questions they need to ask to gain a thorough understanding of the interface.
