Converting .caf files in bulk...
Hi folks. I'm working on a sound design/fx project for a ProTools class I'm taking. I had hoped to use the fx that came with my Logic Pro/Soundtrack library, but PT doesn't like .caf files. Is there an easy way to convert a bunch to .wav files? I have a feeling ITunes might be able to handle it, but then I'd have a huge mess in ITunes to organize, and I'm lazy. Well, tonight I am. Would it work to import a pile into a Logic session and convert them in the Bin? Regardless, I'm probably looking at several hours of organizing the files afterward... Lazy, yup.

Hi sammydave, Have you used Compressor before (bundled with Logic Studio)? I believe you can do a batch conversion of caf files to aiff/wav there. I won't be able to test for a little while unfortunately... but it's a matter of dragging a file or folder in and adjusting the setting (or using a preset) and the destination. Compressor will then batch convert all the files for you :) Cheers Rounik

Try "Easy CAF Converter for Logic Pro" on the Mac App Store. According to an app description, "The Easy CAF Converter for Logic Pro automatically converts Apple Loops installed with Logic Pro 9 and X to uncompressed audio formats (aiff and wave). With the Easy CAF Converter for Logic Pro, musicians using other major DAWs (e.g., Cubase, ProTools, Ableton Live, and Studio One, etc.) can now easily use the rich set of apple loops of Logic Pro in their music productions." If you have QuickTime, give it a try. Many people said this program can do this job. If you don't have it, you'd better choose a good caf converter like Faasoft Audio Converter to convert your caf files to other audio formats like mp3/wav.

Thanks for that suggestion. I'm looking for a Mac converter, and I'm still using OS 10.6.8, so some of the apps won't work for me...

Quicktime 7 Pro should handle it, but only one file at a time. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/extending/index.html Look also in to Apple's Compressor 4.1 app to batch convert many files at once. Also consider updating to a newer version of OS X. You're version is going to cut out most of the potential solutions.

I recommend iDealshare VideoGo which is a professional CAF Converter. It can convert all kinds of CAF audio including 6 channel CAF (CAF with 5.1 surround sound)! Besides converting CAF to MP3, iDealshare VideoGo can also convert CAF to lossless audio like Convert CAF to Apple Lossless ALAC, Monkey%u2019 audio APE, FLAC, WAV and etc. It also can convert CAF to AIFF, AU, RA, M4A, AC3, ACC, WMA, MP2, DTS, OGG and etc. Moreover, this powerful CAF Converter also can increase CAF audio volume; join several CAF files into one; trim audio segment; adjust audio codec, sample rate, audio channels; batch convert CAF files and etc. Step by step guide at http://www.idealshare.net/caf-to-mp3-converter.html

CAF(Core Audio Format) is an audio file format developed by Apple in 2005, and is supported by no matter Mac OS X 10.4 and higher, or iOS 5.0 and higher. This format is designed to overcome limitations of some older audio file formats, such as AIFF and WAV. CAF format uses 64-bit file offsets to break the 4GB file size limitation, so it can save hundreds of years of audio in one file. Besides, CAF supports compressed audio codec like AAC, MP3 and ALAC, so it uses less disk space than AIFF. What's more, CAF supports unlimited channels and metadata. CAF has many advantages over AIFF and WAV, however, many other platforms like Windows, and many players do not support CAF format. Converting your files to MP3 (MPEG-1 Layer 3), a universal audio format supported by nearly any player, will make it playable anywhere. Here is a step by step guide to do this at: http://www.faasoft.com/articles/caf-to-mp3.html
